Regardless of the cause Panic Attacks are treatable
Panic attacks are very intense and debilitating waves of fear.
In many cases, they are triggered by specific situations or stresses, but most often they strike out of the blue, without any obvious trigger or cue. On the other hand, panic attacks can start with a recognisable feeling of worry that swiftly builds up and gets out of proportion. Usually, these “predictable” panic attacks occur in situations where the person anticipates having another panic attack.
These situations become the focus of the fear because the person expects a repetition of the original panic attack and anticipating it inevitably triggers it off. A panic attack is not dangerous itself but the fear of fear can have a profound and detrimental effect on a person’s life. People often avoid situations where they can experience another panic attack and this may lead to varying degrees of agoraphobia.

Panic attacks involve a combination of emotional and physical symptoms, which are often extremely severe and lead to feelings of terror. Along with the physical symptoms of sweating, shaking, shortness of breath and accelerated heart rate, people feel embarrassed, distraught and want to escape from the situation.

A report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists states that more than 9 million Britons suffer from abnormal anxieties, fears, and panic attacks at some time in their lives (Nevile,91). A vast number of sufferers struggle to live with these problems but are reluctant to admit them. People need to understand that panic attacks are quite common and regardless of the cause, they are treatable.
